Our adventure on Rapa Nui, the original name for Easter Island, continues. After our fully packed day 3 (read about our sunrise and paradise beach adventure here), we took today really calm. We slept long, cooked at home and watched documentaries. Unfortunately, we also had to dispose of some unwanted guests in our cabana.

This morning, I woke up staring at the backwards lying carcass of a giant cockroach in front of the bed. First, I simply ignored it and went straight to the bathroom. Unfortunately, another dead cockroach welcomed me in the kitchen some minutes later. Luckily, we bought a strong spray against cockroaches after arrival. Our accommodation is embedded in a jungle. When you step outside, you always meet cockroaches wandering around. So it’s no wonder they enter the homes.
Already after three days, I’m slowly developing an indifferent attitude again, like eight years ago. In the Philippines, you don’t live well worrying too much about cockroaches. Depending on where you live, you have to face them everyday (read about my Filipino adventures here).
Cockroaches were imported on Rapa Nui by settlers. Since then, they’ve slowly contributed to the extinction of the very few remaining endemic insects. It’s unfortunate, but in some way the natural circle of changing environments.
As travelers, we need to unfortunately accept and deal with the fact that even paradise has cockroaches.
