We loved our cycling trip through Mendoza. It brought us out of the city center towards the calmer and greener countryside of Mendoza's neighborhood Maipú. 🇦🇷 There, you got a large choice of diverse bodegas to choose from. In addition to the wine tasting, often accompanied by fingerfood or a real meal, some bodegas also offer (self-)guided tours across their vineyards and production spaces.

If you visit Mendoza and want more than just an alcoholic afternoon, I recommend you rent a bike and get active. 🤩

🎥 Meet the giants of Peninsula Valdés! 🦭

After seeing penguins on Peninsula Valdés, we couldn’t miss the chance to spot some South American sea lions and southern elephant seals – two impressive species that call these shores home.

The sea lions (weighing up to 350 kg) were mostly chilling, with the males hissing at each other to establish dominance. But the real showstoppers were the southern elephant seals — true giants of the animal kingdom, tipping the scales at up to 4 tons! 😱 We even spotted a few with their tiny trunks — not quite like elephants, but still fascinating.

Watching these marine mammals in their natural habitat was such a special experience. Have you ever seen seals or sea lions in the wild? 🌊💙

✨ Penguin Spotting on Peninsula Valdés 🐧

We spent an incredible day exploring the Peninsula Valdés, where we were lucky to spot Magellanic penguins in their natural habitat! These adorable birds come here to breed and molt, drawn by the peninsula's rich marine biodiversity and safer environment compared to other coastal areas. With fish, squid, and crustaceans aplenty in the South Atlantic waters, it’s an ideal spot for raising chicks.

Sadly, the penguin population here has been declining in recent years due to climate change, oil pollution, tourism-related stress, and even predation by pumas. It’s a reminder of how fragile this ecosystem is and how important conservation efforts are.

At this time of year, the best place to spot large colonies is around Punta Loma near Puerto Madryn, but we decided to skip the tour — after all, we had already seen plenty of their African penguin cousins during our time in South Africa a few weeks ago.

Welcome to Puerto Pirámides, the only town on the UNESCO Peninsula Valdés, near Puerto Madryn in Argentina! 🌊🐋 Puerto Pirámides is famous for its spectacular cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and the southern right whales that arrive between June and December. Year-round, if you're lucky, you can spot sea lions, penguins, and even orcas. 🐧🦭

We didn’t have any spectacular sightings but enjoyed the calm cliffs and its clear waters for a break after driving.

Next stop: penguin colony... 🤩
