When I recently planned a trip to Rome with my parents, I ran into a problem I thought I could easily solve. Three weeks in advance, tickets for the Colosseum and Palatine Hill completely sold out on the official website. At that point, I had two options: accept it and skip one of Rome’s most iconic sites, or find another way. Skipping it wasn’t really an option. So I did what I usually do in these situations: I checked alternative platforms. And yes, I found tickets.

Platforms I personally use
GetYourGuide:* Usually my first check when something is sold out elsewhere. Wide selection and often last-minute availability.
Viator:* Similar to GetYourGuide, sometimes with slightly different offers or time slots.
AirBnB Experiences: More focused on smaller, local activities — less about major sights, more about unique experiences.
When I actually use booking platforms
I use boking platforms selectively, not automatically. In fact, I prefer exploring places independently whenever possible. I would always try official sources first.
But there are situations where GetYourGuide, Viator, AirBnB Experiences and others are genuinely useful. In those cases, they’re usually less about “tours” and more about access:
- when official tickets are sold out
- when access is complicated or unclear
- when you’re travelling with others (like family) and want something structured
- or when you’re simply short on time
Keep in mind, these platforms are helpful, but they’re not perfect.
- Prices are often higher than official tickets
- Not every tour adds real value
- Some experiences feel a bit standardised
Small disclaimer
These are platforms I use myself. If you book through one of my links, I might earn a small commission — basically coffee money. No extra cost for you, but it helps me keep sharing experiences like this.
