During my backpacking month to Southeast-Asia in early 2023, I travelled to Cambodia and Vietnam (read about my itinerary here). I noticed that in both countries, prices had increased significantly this last couple of years . Many blogs still state pre-covid travel expenses. That’s why I’ll give travelers an updated price list and note my Vietnam travel two-week budget 2023 in today’s post.
If you are planning to travel to Vietnam in 2023, it is important to consider the following costs for your trip.
Accommodation
The cost of accommodation in Vietnam varies depending on the type of accommodation you choose. Budget hotels and guesthouses can cost as little as €8 per night per person, while luxury hotels can cost upwards of €100 per night. Hostels in Vietnam are similarly priced to elsewhere in Southeast Asia. However, in comparison to Cambodian hotels (find my Cambodia travel budget 2023 here), Vietnamese hotels are slightly cheaper. You can expect to spend around €5-15 a night for a dorm bed, and €15-30 for a private room.
Daily Budget
A budget traveler should expect to spend approximately €27 in Vietnam, not including accommodation, flights, overland trains or buses. This generally means choosing a mix of street food and local restaurants, and using affordable transportation options like Grab.
Intercity Transportation
Buses between Hoi An and Hue, Hue and Ninh Binh, Ninh Binh and Cat Ba, as well as Cat Ba and Hanoi cost me around €75 in total. The fare depends on the distance and level of comfort you choose. I generally recommend the luxury versions because you’ll get more space, comfort and additional services like water and snacks.
Domestic Flights
A domestic flight between Ho Chi Minh and Da Nang cost me around €70. While there are also cheaper trains between these two cities, the ride will be much longer. Especially if your time is limited, I recommend this domestic flight option. After speaking to friends who chose the overnight train over the flight, I’m definitely happy that we decided for more comfort and more time in both towns.
Visa
Because I entered Vietnam by bus from Cambodia, I applied for a visa in advance. It cost me €24. You may be able to get a visa on arrival or apply online for your e-visa here. Please check out if your entry port offers visa on arrival at all.
Vietnam vs. Cambodia travel budget 2023
While prices have increased significantly compared to pre-covid times, Vietnam remains a very affordable destination. Generally, prices vary depending on the season, location, level of comfort and quality. But if you’re looking at both Vietnam and Cambodia, Vietnam is the more budget-friendly country this year, in my experience.
Nevertheless, Vietnam and Cambodia are both very affordable destinations and offer so many places, food, history and culture worth exploring. So if you can, I recommend you combine both because they’re unforgettable!
